Rarely is the heartbreaking reality of human trafficking discussed. Perhaps because the topic is too daunting or harsh to want to address; this is the grave topic that two critical novels by Vahan Zanoyan tackle. The difficult but global phenomenon of human trafficking and sex trade is a dark reality for many including present day Armenia. A Place Far Away and its sequel, The Doves of Ohanavank tell the story of Lara Galian, a beautiful teenage girl from an impoverished village in Armenia, who falls victim to sex trafficking. In The Doves of Ohanavank, after escaping from forced prostitution, she returns to Armenia to re-establish her life and fight against the oligarchs who trafficked her. Based largely on real events, the novels are written with the purpose of raising public awareness about this sad reality.
