These individuals are inspiring, dynamic, innovative and interesting. Today, we honor Armenia’s new President Armen Sarkissian.

On Monday, April 9th, Dr. Armen Sarkissian took the Oath of the President of Armenia during a special session of the Armenian Parliament, as Armenia transitioned to parliamentary system of government.
In his inauguration speech, President Sarkissian called for the creation of “a new, young Armenia” – a dynamic, flexible and creative Armenia. A country which will embody the wisdom and talent of the global Armenian people, which will be in line with the aspirations of all of us and will become the source of pride and excitement of all. A homeland for all Armenians worldwide.
“We are living in an ever-changing world full of various dangers, threats and challenges. But it is also full of new and attractive opportunities for us. And whether we will be able to use these historic opportunities depends on us. And it depends on us as to what kind of Armenia we want to shape in the 21st century. An Armenia, which will be able to withstand the century’s challenges and take a worthy place among advanced nations. This, certainly is an historic opportunity,” President Sarkissian said during his inauguration speech.
He called on all Armenians to come together and work to stabilize the socio-economic and political landscape of Armenia, vowing to fight corruption and elevate Armenia’s standing. He is a strong advocate for economic development and growth in the science and technology to advance and strengthen Armenia. Dr. Sarkissian’s focus on science and technology aligned strongly with the nature of his recent private trip to the Silicon Valley and meetings with the technology leaders. The depth and diversity of his leadership, business and political experience have greatly impressed the Bay Area audience, while his vision for Armenia is inspiring renewed hope and optimism.
Dr. Sarkissian served as prime minister of Armenia from Nov. 4, 1996 to March 20, 1997. Previously, he had been Armenia’s ambassador in London. He has also served as the Armenian ambassador to the European Union, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and the Holy See. He is the founding President of Eurasia House International, which fosters critical dialogue and cooperation among political and business leaders.
A well-known civic leader, Dr. Sarkissian holds honorary and executive positions in numerous international organizations, including the role of Chairman of the Global Council on Energy Security for the World Economic Forum. Dr. Sarkissian is a Member of the Euro-Atlantic Security Initiative (EASI) Commission. He serves as a Board Member of the International Economic Alliance.
As an Honorable Professor of the Armenian Academy of Science, Dr. Sarkissian has authored numerous academic articles and publications on theoretical physics, astrophysics, computer modeling, political science and transition economics. He holds a PhD in Physics from Yerevan State University.
