THRIVE is an AIWA-SF April project dedicated to highlighting Armenians who are doing amazing things in their personal and professional lives to better themselves and those around them. These individuals are inspiring, dynamic, innovative and interesting. Today, we feature Margarita Zakiyan.
Name: Margarita Zakiyan || Legal Counsel, Google
Margarita holds law degree from Novosibirsk State University (Russia) and Master of Laws (LL.M.) from University of San Francisco School of Law. After graduating from Law School in Siberia, Margaria moved to Moscow to pursue her “Russian dream” and explore career opportunities in intellectual property law, something that she wanted to do from the outset of her legal career. Having spent four years as a Legal Counsel in a publishing company in Moscow, Margarita wanted to go beyond that and pursue a career in a large international company with the focus on intellectual property law. Exactly then Margarita decided to get an LL.M. degree in the Bay Area. After completing LL.M. program, Margarita got a job offer with Microsoft working on a wide spectrum of legal issues. After almost 4 years at Microsoft, Margarita joined Google as a Legal Counsel providing overall legal support for Russia and CIS countries. Recently, Margarita transferred to YouTube in San Bruno and is currently a Product Counsel at YouTube, a Google company.
Margarita’s career path was full of challenges and new experiences and that’s what keeps her moving forward. She shares, “Every new challenge is a step forward; it is an exceptionally valuable life changing experience and personal growth test for me”. Margarita truly believes that the role of women is pivotal in addressing the ongoing challenges in the world of today and drives to empower women to use their voices in making a change. She is proud of her Armenian origin and heritage and hopes to see the Armenian women movement thrive and excel.
